Who Cares For the Mothers?

"I always put my children first even when my health suffers, because that’s what mothers do,” says Nabawanuka , a mother of three in Uganda.

Her words reflect the silent sacrifice carried by countless women in vulnerable communities. Day after day, Nabawanuka wakes up before the sun rises, walking long distances to fetch water, preparing meals, tending to small gardens, and ensuring her children have the chance to go to school. All the while, her own health needs are pushed aside; headaches ignored, fevers endured and fatigue hidden behind a smile.

But for how long should women carry this burden alone?

Too often, mothers like Nabawanuka shoulder the weight of poverty, limited access to healthcare, and the constant struggle to provide. Their strength is extraordinary, but it should never come at the cost of their own well-being. A mother’s love should be celebrated with support, not tested by isolation.

Mothers deserve more than survival, they deserve care, support, and the chance to be independent. When we empower mothers, we empower families. And when families thrive, communities grow stronger.
